“Life is about what you give, not what you get!” – Chris Brady
On Saturday, March 18th, 2017, approximately 20 Life Members gathered together to clean and remodel the home of widow, Joan Cannon and her Serviceman son, Brandon, for the Life on Life Initiative.
The Life Samurai organization had served this family over a year ago (Winter 2015) through a Life on Life event in Detroit, cleaning and renovating a boy’s home that the Cannon family voluntarily helped operate.
Then, in November of 2016, Joan’s husband, Bill, passed away suddenly, leaving Joan with a home that needed much renovation so that she could sell it and move forward with her life. Local Life Members stepped in to fill her family’s needs once again. Showing up the morning after a March snowstorm, the team gathered with Joan that cold Saturday carrying with them warm coffee, fresh donuts, and a determined spirit to serve!
The Samurai team spent their day demolishing rotted sub floor, cleaning, laying new sub floor and wood laminate in the living room and three bedrooms. The team also cleaned, prepped and painted two bedrooms, a loft, a hallway, and began painting in the living room.
Joan was beyond excited for all that the team accomplished in the day’s work. Her son returned home from military training that evening and was greeted by Life volunteers, a fresh home, and (of course) his dog. The work these Life Members provided helped put the family weeks ahead of schedule, under budget, and surrounded by people who care, love, and serve as they are commanded in James 1:27.
“I am glad that I took the time to help on the Life on Life project. I’m glad that I was able to use the skills that I have to serve other people. It was an awesome feeling to give my time and energy to someone who’s done so much for a young boy’s home. To be blessed is a great feeling, but to be a blessing is even better.” – Loyal Gingerich (Life Member)
“It was an honor for our family to be able to come together with the group and serve Joan and her family. Not only were we able to make a difference in her life, we had fun doing it!” – Melissa Boza (Life Member)
“It was great to use my knowledge and construction background to help a family in need after losing a husband/father. I know how hard it can be to go through something like that.” – George O’Melia (Life Member)
“It’s a pleasure to be able to use the skills I’ve learned in carpentry over my life to be able to bless others.” – Brandon Perry (Life Member)
Thank you to all of the Life Members who participated in this Life on Life Initiative from the Samurai organization, under the leadership of Bill and Keisha Lewis! Your efforts made a difference for a very deserving family.
