“Excellence is doing ordinary things extraordinarily well.” – John Gardner
Life has a standard of excellence that few corporate companies can compete with. The staff at the World Headquarters not only take pride in their work, but they work hard day in and day out to ensure that Life Members have unquestionable confidence in the company they represent.
One of the ways that Life corporate rewards high-achievers is by asking the staff to nominate their colleagues for the Golden Rascal Award. The award is given to the person who receives the most votes based on leadership, attitude, hunger, character and creativity – among many others.
Not surprisingly, numerous names are voted for each month so the award could be given to just about everyone. However, there can only be one winner! For the month of August, we would like to recognize one of the company’s IT masterminds – Anthony Morgan!
First of all, tell us a little about yourself.
I grew up in Ohio and have two younger brothers. I moved to North Carolina shortly after college and received a computer science degree and did entrepreneurial studies. I first started out in the medical field doing computer programming.
How did you land your position with Life corporate?
A good friend of mine told me there was a position open at Life and thought it would be a good fit for my personality – one that leverages my social responsibility to my community and would also allow me to use my design and computer programming talents in order to help affect a large population of lives. It was a series of 3 or 4 interviews so I knew they were serious about finding the right fit and I’m glad that they realized that was me. 🙂 I didn’t realize that I would be interviewing with the real “Chris Brady” which is when I realized I had a big opportunity here to be partners with someone who is truly making an impact in the world. It really drove me to want to excel by knowing who I would be working for and learning from. There was no second-guessing my decision, I knew this is where I needed to be.
How long have you been with Life and what is your current role with the company?
I’ve been with the company one year and I am the web developer. I help support all of the online applications – Financial Fitness portals, new products on our digital platform, etc. I work closely with Martin Spusta and another programmer to make sure the sites stay up and running so that we can deliver the best content possible to our customers.
What is the best part of your job?
The best part of my job is that I get to walk around in my socks all day 🙂 The laid back atmosphere, the friendly environment – it’s just not something you find everywhere. Most companies only care about the job you do but don’t always think about the person on a social and emotional level and I think the friendships we develop here at Life just make dealing with stressful situations so much easier because you have real relationships with them. Everyone’s doors are always open and it’s such an inviting environment – you never feel like you are bothering people. It was something I was lacking in other jobs I’ve had which made me feel like I was not part of a team and made me feel like I wasn’t making a difference. Getting the Golden Rascal Award just reassures me that the work I do here does make a difference and people recognize it – even if I just sit behind a computer all day – it’s nice to know that your peers care and are receptive to the work that I do here.
What would you say is your lifelong passion?
I want so bad to be outside building, landscaping and remodeling homes. I want to wake before the sun, pour my coffee and head out the door towards a new unambiguous day everyday, returning home physically exhausted but filled with a genuine sense of accomplishment, eager to start the next day.
I just love building and interior design – remodeling, construction, things that incorporate design, creativity, color and imagination. I like to “beautify” things and make people smile! 🙂
If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
Super speed – Anything that would help me move at high speeds and get to places faster. I like to travel and it would help me see the world and get more accomplished in a shorter period of time.
If you had a time machine, where would you go – back in time or into the future and why?
Yes, there are things in my past that I would like to change – however, I don’t think I would want to change it because those experiences have made me who I am today. Moving forward though, I think I would like to go to the future so I could see if some of the predictions I’ve made actually happen and maybe even prevent bad things from happening by being able to see the future before it happens.
Tell us about one of your most embarrassing experiences.
Accepting the Golden Rascal Award and not expecting it 🙂
Well, to wrap up, what do you enjoy doing when you aren’t working?
I enjoy riding my long board outside, hiking in the eno, mountain biking, hanging out with friends and shooting pool, working on any creative design ideas that I have. Anything NOT computer related! 🙂
I am also one of the founding members of Rising Above the Storms – a non-profit organization that offers hope to the hopeless through initiatives that promote education and a deep love for the orphan in underdeveloped areas of the world.
Here is something I wrote when I was 13, and these goals are still true today:
Life is so proud to have someone as dedicated and hard-working as Anthony Morgan in the IT department. Congratulations Anthony on winning the Golden Rascal Award for the month of August!
